National Art Honor Society Students Participate in MLK Portrait Project
The National Art Honor Society commemorated Martin Luther King Jr. Day through participation in the annual MLK Portrait Project. The students crafted individual panels that combined to form a mosaic portrait of the civil rights leader Shirley Chisolm, the first African American woman elected to Congress and a close colleague of Dr. King.
As a passionate advocate for civil rights, Chisholm worked alongside Dr. King in the fight for racial equality and justice. Her commitment to public service and her tireless work for the advancement of marginalized communities aligns with Dr. King’s principles, making her an important figure in this movement. The MLK Portrait Project highlights how Chisholm’s strength, and the strength of other highlighted civil rights leaders, is magnified within a community.
National Art Honor Society members who participated in the project include Georgia Buckley, Gerrald Caramore, Logan Carr, Marlow Collamore, Morgan Dunne, Rachel Haas, Mya Hayes, Charlie Johnson, Zoe King, Sarah Liquori, Lou Morataya, Kate Nemschick, Vivianna Rodrigez and Remy Tryniszewski.
The honor society’s completed mosaic portrait will join others on display at the Lyceum Gallery of the Eastern Campus of Suffolk County Community College in Riverhead through March 7 on Monday – Thursday (9 a.m.- 9:30 p.m.) and Friday (10 a.m. – 3 p.m.).
Visitors can also cast their votes for their favorite portrait during gallery hours. The original portraits will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefitting the East End Arts School scholarship fund.
