Cutchogue East Patriot Day Assembly Honors

First Responders and Defines Community Unity

Cutchogue East Elementary School gathered students, staff and distinguished community guests for a meaningful Patriot Day assembly to remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and to celebrate the spirit of kindness, service and community that defines the area.

Principal Amy Brennan’s address encouraged thoughtful reflection and a moment of unity as the school joined in the Pledge of Allegiance led by student leaders and a moment of silence in remembrance of the courage and sacrifice of the day’s heroes.

“This day is a reminder of the power of coming together,” Principal Brennan said. “We honor those who serve us with courage and dedication and commit to building a community grounded in trust and kindness.”

Highlighting the school’s Tucker Core Value for the month of September, “trustworthy,” Principal Brennan introduced honored local first responders, including police, fire, EMS, nurses, security staff, public safety dispatchers, veteran and emergency volunteers. Each group was recognized by students through heartfelt presentation and a token of gratitude in the form of crafted cards and pins.

Instructional coach Leah Vitucci emphasized that Patriot Day is not only for remembrance but for carrying forward values central to the community: kindness, service, and unity. Students from the CARES committee shared personal reflections on these themes, reinforcing the message that acts of caring and service strengthen the bonds that hold the community together.

Additionally, grade-level student groups spoke specifically about the roles and sacrifices of first responders, urging respect and appreciation for the everyday heroes who protect and care for them. The assembly concluded with a moving recitation of the poem “A Light We Can Share,” symbolizing hope and collective strength.

The Patriot Day assembly stands as a testament to Cutchogue East Elementary School’s commitment to fostering values that inspire students to be compassionate citizens and active members of their community.

Cutchogue East Elementary School would like to extend sincere thanks to the following agencies for their presence at the assembly and for allowing the school to honor their service: Southold Town Police Department, Southold Fire Department, Cutchogue Fire Department, Mattituck Fire Department, Stony Brook Medicine, and the dedicated staff members of the Mattituck-Cutchogue Union Free School District.
