Student Athletes are at the Top of Their Game

Posted Date: 10/28/25 (2:15 PM)

It has been a banner season for Mattituck-Cutchogue student-athletes who competed in golf, girls volleyball and boys soccer during the fall season.

Six members of the varsity boys golf team entered the Section XI Conference Championship on Oct. 17. This tournament is unique in that even though this is a team tournament, the individual golfers scores are counted as a qualifier for the Section XI Individual County Championship which began on Oct. 20. Sophomore Sam Quartararo shot an impressive 75, taking fourth place, and senior Michael Buckley shot 76 for fifth place in the conference. Both Sam and Michael earned All-Conference Honors and qualified for a tee time on Oct. 20.

On Day One of the Individual Tournament, Michael shot an 85 and missed the cut by one stroke. Sam, however, shot 79 and made it to Day Two of the Individual Tournament on Oct. 21. In the Championship round with a chance to qualify for the New York State Tournament, Sam was perfect through 17 holes, going into the 18th hole one under par. He doubled bogeyed the 18th hole to shoot a 74, securing a fourth place finish. Sam also became the first golfer in Mattituck history to qualify for the NYS Championship and join the Suffolk County All-State Team where he will travel to Rochester on June 5–8 at Mill Creek Golf Course to compete for a chance at the title.

The girls volleyball team completed their season having qualified to enter the Class B post-season as the number three seed. The first round match-up will be against the Southampton Mariners on Oct. 30, at 5:30 p.m., at Southampton High School. The two teams have faced off twice already and are split. The winner will move on to face Bayport-Blue Point in the County Championship on Nov. 7. The boys varsity soccer team also qualified for the post-season and will play in the first round of the playoffs on Oct. 29. There are two possible opponents, Center Moriches or Babylon, two teams which gave the Tuckers a difficult time in the regular season.

The district extends best wishes to the student-athletes and coaches for success in post-season competitions. Go Tuckers!
