Art Students Explore Street Art and History on Inspiring Day Trip
The Mattituck Art students enjoyed an unforgettable and enriching experience this past Thursday during a guided tour of the vibrant Bushwick Collective graffiti murals in Brooklyn. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather. The group spent the day immersed in the dynamic world of street art while learning about the neighborhood’s cultural and historical transformation.
During the tour, students discovered how the Bushwick area, once impacted by the unrest of the 1977 New York City blackout riots, has since been revitalized through the power of public art. They gained insight into how artists from around the world have contributed to turning the neighborhood into a globally recognized outdoor gallery, bringing new life, color, and community pride to the streets.
Following the tour, the group traveled to the Graf Lab in Holtsville, where students had the opportunity to apply what they learned by creating their own graffiti-inspired artwork. Under guided instruction, they experimented with techniques, styles, and creative expression.
This experience provided students with a unique blend of history, culture, and artistic exploration. It was a meaningful and memorable day that deepened their appreciation for street art and its role in community transformation.
